2019 Schild Estate Old & Survivor Vine Grenache
There’s been a lot of buzz around Grenache in Australia lately, but Schild Estate has been growing it for ages! They know how to do it right, and their 2019 Old & Survivor Vine Grenache is proof of that.
This limited release comes from two super special estate-owned vineyards: Three Springs Vineyard, established in 1926 with those impressive Survivor Vines at 300m elevation, and the Kleemann Vineyard, which has Old Vines dating back to 1985 and sits a bit higher at 320m.
Now, what’s the deal with Survivor and Old Vines? In the Barossa, a Survivor Vine is at least 70 years old, while an Old Vine is over 35. These definitions might vary by region, but that’s how it goes in the Barossa.
For just $43, this Grenache punches way above its weight—it's even snagged a Gold medal at the Global Grenache Masters, outshining competitors like the $65 Grenache from Hutton Vale Farm and the well-known De Bortoli entry. This wine sits nicely on the medium to full-bodied scale, giving it that extra OOMPH that we love!
It's already drinking beautifully, but with a little time, it’ll develop into something even more special. The SCHILD Old & Survivor Vine Grenache 2019 flaunts a rich, deep red colour and a nose that’s downright amazing—think blackberry, plum, and fresh strawberries with a hint of spice and earthiness. On the palate, it’s smooth and creamy, bursting with cherry and red currant flavours. The tannins come in just right, giving it a solid structure while keeping everything balanced for a really satisfying finish.
