La Réserve de Château Palais Cardinal Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2022
La Réserve de Château Palais Cardinal, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2022, is a cracking Bordeaux blend that’s all about elegance and flavour. Made with 22% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Merlot, this new vintage is approachable yet packed with layers of complexity.
The story behind this wine is as impressive as the drop itself. The property dates back to the 13th century when Cardinal Gaillard de la Motte, nephew of Pope Clement V, lent his name to the iconic Cardinal Palace in Saint-Émilion village. The vineyard, located in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens just south of Saint-Émilion, sits on gravel and sandy soils naturally drained by the La Fuie stream—ideal for producing top-notch grapes. Since 2018, it’s been owned and managed by Monsieur Louis Ballande, who knows a thing or two about running vineyards.
As for the wine, expect bold aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and cassis, with hints of oak, vanilla, earthiness, and even a touch of brown sugar and pastry. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins and juicy dark fruits. The finish is long, smooth, and seriously satisfying.
At 13% ABV and with the potential to age beautifully (drink now or cellar until 2030+), this wine is exceptional value. Whether you’re a Bordeaux newbie or a seasoned collector, it’s one to have on hand!
